First, IST Research is an engineering company with an operational focus.  Our team is comprised of engineers and scientists that have executed research and development projects for some of the nations premier research agencies.  We have delivered innovation into some of the harshest conditions imaginable.  Partnership and collaboration drive our technical approach and whether we create the solutions in house or help integrate technologies of others with emerging operational concepts, we conduct our work with others.  Our team is embedded with operators from many domains.  These operators have seen many promises pass them by and they want to deliver something different to their peers.

Second, our innovations focus on decision-making and the interaction between the human/organizational decision process and the digital information environment.  The innovations we deliver come from creating environments that stimulate the co-evolution of technology and operations.  This process helps prevent the creation of technology that simply digitizes an analog process or the modification of business processes to fit emerging technological advances.  Our innovations come when decision makers and technologists immerse in a problem solving process together where the human decision process influences technical solutions and innovation influences the decision processes and the result is a fundamental change.

To the Edge

Finally, we are interested in the development of solutions that serve operators that operate at the edge.  The edge refers not to a specific place or a narrowly defined set of characteristics but simply to that place where support, network reliability, power and other resources are scarce.  Whether the operations revolve around the humanitarian response to the January 2010 Haitian Earthquake, medical missions into remote parts of the African continent, special operations in the Philippines, or massive wild fires in Southern California.  The operators we serve are tired, dirty and hungry.  They are operating with no access to a helpdesk engineer.  Their network connections are spotty at best.  They may be days away from finding the next electrical outlet.  They are operating at the Edge.
